Beate Becker
Beate is a cultural
economic development specialist who has collaborated with Mt. Auburn
Associates for more than ten years. With Mt. Auburn, she developed and
co-authored strategic cultural development plans including The Creative
Economy Initiative: a Blueprint for Investment in New England’s Creative
Economy; Louisiana: Where Culture Means Business and On the Cultural
Road: Lowell’s Cultural Development Plan 2007. Her articles have
appeared in economic journals including the Federal Reserve Bank of
Boston and the Northeast Economic Development Association and she speaks
frequently at national and international conferences.
Ms. Becker has initiated and led cultural economic development efforts
at the city, state and regional levels. In 1996, she developed and
managed the Cultural Economic Development program (now the Adams Arts
Fund) for the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She was a founder of the
New England Creative Economy Initiative and, as its first director, was
integrally involved in the development of the partnership’s six-state
cultural development strategy. Her work as Special Assistant for
Creative Sector Development at the Boston Redevelopment Authority laid
the groundwork for the City’s CreateBoston program. Other clients
include the Fuller Craft Museum and the City of Brockton; the
Massachusetts College of Art; and the Salem Enterprise Center.
Ms. Becker is active in global creative industries networks and has
spoken at conferences in Newcastle, Belfast, Glasgow and Istanbul. Her
international clients include the Scottish Highlands & Islands
Enterprise; the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts’
in the U.K.; and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and Austrian Trade
Commission. She is a co-founder of the Vienna-based Shapeshifters LLC, a
global network of creative industry professionals.
Ms. Becker earned a BA from Bennington College and an MBA from the Yale
School of Management. She is an alumna of the School of the Museum of
Fine Arts in Boston and a former jeweler and flutemaker.
