The firm has been involved in numerous efforts that seek to define the cluster, to quantify its importance, to facilitate and engage artists and businesses within the cluster, and to develop economic development and workforce strategies focused on the cluster. Mt. Auburn Associates believes that in many communities the arts and cultural sector is a potential source of economic growth. Our approach goes beyond using the arts as a tool for revitalizing cities or enhancing the quality of life for “knowledge-based” workers. These efforts, while important, only tap a fraction of the economic development potential of the arts and culture sector. Mt. Auburn believes that the Creative Economy is a legitimate economic cluster; an economic engine in its own right. Maine New Century Program. Mt. Auburn completed an evaluation of Maine’s New Century Program, an innovative collaborative of seven state arts and humanities agencies. Mt. Auburn’s research methodology clearly defined program outputs (numbers and types of services provided, and satisfaction with program services among community grant recipients and beneficiaries), program outcomes (intermediate and longer-term community impacts of program services), and institutional developmental impacts (impacts on the capacity of local cultural organizations to undertake development activities that will translate into economic and community benefits in the future). As part of this evaluation, undertaken with support from the Pew Foundation, Mt. Auburn also prepared case studies that examined the role of historic assets, libraries, and other arts and cultural amenities to the civic life and economies of four communities in Maine.
